Jasmin Child Care and Preschool - Community & Business Spotlight

All across the U.S., finding affordable childcare, with prices averaging $1300 - $1800 per month, is one of the top barriers for parents when attempting to access reliable, full-time employment. Factoring in cuts made to social programming that assists with childcare costs and the rising costs of living and commute, parents everywhere are struggling to afford to work. This is especially true for parents functioning at or below the rate of poverty, which affects refugee and immigrant families at an alarming 2-3x more than natural born citizens. Thankfully, local business turned nonprofit, Jasmin Child Care and Preschool, is taking action to help change this reality for working parents within our community.


When the idea occurred to Rhoda to open a childcare and preschool center, it was with the intent to support refugee families in gaining access to safe, affordable childcare that allowed children to exist and learn within their cultures. Prior to opening her doors, she completed two years of market research, visiting schools and county programs, to determine the extent and nature of the need. What she found, was that it was significant and multi-faceted. There were many families who had children that would greatly benefit from a program that provided this support, however, those same families were not likely able to afford it.


It didn't take long for her to realize just how large of an undertaking this would be as one of very few (if any) childcare centers in the area that focus specifically on providing care and learning opportunities through a multicultural lens, and approximately 90% of the families served being considered low-income and receiving childcare assistance, so she pursued 501(c)3 nonprofit status in order to expand opportunities for financial support for their organization, allowing them to expand programming and keep costs low.


Understanding that children that come from low-income and/or refugee families are not provided the opportunities and experiences as their more privileged peers, Rhoda and her team endeavor to close that gap through excellent, high-standard educational and cultural training for their staff, scoring step 3 on their Bright & Early step rating (find out more about the significance of this here), and the provision of experiences tailored to help children relate better to their peers.


With a core tenet of "Communication is the foundation of trust - trust is the foundation of learning," their primary educational focus is on language acquisition and literacy, with almost every child entering school reading at grade level and, at minimum, one child each year experiencing exponential growth with the ability to read and comprehend well beyond the expected level. All of their curriculum is provided in English, with supporting materials provided in other languages. Several of their teachers are polyglots (multi-linguists), allowing them to provide children more support in learning and understanding content deeper and acquiring the English language more rapidly.


Their dedication to providing care and learning opportunities at a holistic, higher quality level than most low-income childcare services can provide, truly sets the children they serve up for success by affirming their value and right to success in educational spaces. To ensure access to these supports, they do their best to keep their childcare rates in lockstep with the rate of childcare assistance, with a scale (based on age) ranging from $855 - $1,278 per month - well below the national average.
